We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution Summer Institutes
The Center for Civic Education offers workshops, content seminars, institutes, and conferences for upper elementary, middle, and high school teachers, university and college professors, members of the legal community, and We the People state and congressional district coordinators throughout the school year and during the summer. The Center for Civic Education, through a grant provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is pleased to announce a three-week NEH Summer Institute for educators from public and private high schools, middle schools, and upper elementary schools that will take place at Occidental College in Eagle Rock, California. The institute will provide twenty-five American and up to five international educators the opportunity to engage in serious study and seminar-style discussion of basic issues of political theory and the values and principles of American constitutional democracy.

California On My Honor is offered with no registration expenses to 30 competitively selected teachers and includes:

  • $500 teacher stipend
  • Transportation, lodging and meals
  • New resources and curriculum development time
  • Collaboration with judges, attorneys, and other colleagues
  • Field visits to a California Superior Court, California Supreme Court, and a Judicial Council Meeting
  • 2 Units available through CSUSM Extended Learning

Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History
Our grant partner has excellent opportunities available for you this summer. Up to ten spots will be available to teachers in our cohort. Please indicate San Bernardino County TAH Grant in your application materials. Applications are due on February 19, 2009 to the Gilder Lehrman Institute via the online process located at their website.

Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops for K-12 Schoolteachers
The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent grant-making agency of the federal government. As part of the NEH’s We the People program, NEH offers Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops for Schoolteachers. Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops provide the opportunity for K-12 educators to engage in intensive study and discussion of important topics in American history. These one-week academies will give participants direct experiences in the interpretation of significant historical sites and the use of archival and other primary historical evidence.
 
Amount of Award
Teachers selected to participate will receive a stipend of $750 at the end of the residential Workshop session. Stipends are intended to help cover living expenses, books, and travel expenses to and from the Workshop location. Travel supplements will be available, but will be allocated on a case-by-case basis after the Workshop session is over.
 
The application deadline is March 16, 2009 (postmark).

Horace Mann-Abraham Lincoln Fellowship
K-12 teachers of any discipline are invited to apply for the 2009 Horace Mann-Abraham
Lincoln Fellowship. The program includes a five-day summer institute in Springfield, Illinois.
Participants will visit several historical sites including Lincoln’s home, Lincoln’s tomb
and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Presentations about Lincoln’s
life and the Civil War era will be made by top experts. Winning fellows will receive roundtrip
transportation, lodging, and most meals.
