Mrs. Clark
I don't have very many memories of school--maybe because it was so long ago--but I do remember this: When I was in 2nd and 3rd grade, I lived in Denmark. The principal of our school used to come in and read to our class everyday. Imagine how surprised I was the day she began reading a very American story--"Little House on the Prairie" in Danish!

Miss Lopez stands out in my mind. She appreciated creativity. When I got the bright idea to do my research report on Paracatin, a volcano in Mexico, in first person as the volcano, she not only embraced the idea, she showed it to other teachers as a good example. It took a very observant caring person to look beyond the quiet messy haired little girl who had been in five different schools and see the person she could become. It was the first time I thought of myself as smart.

I grew up in Long Beach, CA where the elementary schools went through the 6th grade. When I was in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade I was privileged enough to be one of our school librarian's helpers. When I got finished with my work in class, I got to go to the library to help stamp returned or re-shelf books. I also got to be one of the first ones to read and review the new books that came into our library. When I was nine years old Island of the Blue Dolphins was published and I was the first one to get to read and review it. I loved the story and have read it many times throughout my life.

I loved my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Proud. She was always so nice and calm. I loved going back to visit her, even through high school.
