Welcome to my ePortfolio! I began my current position as Literacy Curriculum Specialist for San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools in February 2008. It hasn't been very long, but I've learned so much.
Prior to coming to SBCSS I worked in Upland Unified for ELEVEN years. I taught 9th grade College Prep English and Academic Literacy, as well as Peer Counseling at Upland High School. I truly, truly loved teaching my Academic Literacy kids. They still inspire me to spread the word that ALL students can achieve in school, if you give them the support and guidance they need and show them how much you care.
Most of my career was spent at Upland Junior High, where I taught 7th and 8th grade Reading Intervention, 7th grade English, and was the Dance Company teacher and adviser. It was at UJHS where I learned of the power of Reading Apprenticeship. I also began coaching teachers at UJHS as a BTSA Support Provider and technology coach for English teachers when we earned an EETT (Enhancing Education Through Technology) grant.
My formative teaching years were spent at Baldy View Elementary School, where I taught in a first grade bilingual and English immersion setting.
But what about me personally you ask? To keep sane I dance. I have always danced in some genre, but most recently I dance hula at a halau in Diamond Bar. The beauty of the art and concept of aloha keeps me calm, centered, and focused as much as possible.

A hui ho! Heather
