Thanks for coming!

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for the wonderful turn-out at Back-to-School Night.  It was great to meet all of you and to have a chance to explain some of my classroom procedures and expectations to you.  If you weren't able to attend, or if you missed either one of my PowerPoint presentations, you can find them on our website "Welcome" page (the page you're taken to when you enter the website).  Just scroll almost all the way to the bottom.  Feel free to review them over again, even if you did attend, and if there's anything that is unclear, just let me know.

I appreciate your show of support.  I feel that we are off to a great start, and I'm looking forward to working with you throughout the school year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark

You're Invited . . .

Dear Parents,

We're well on our way now, and the children are doing a great job of learning our classroom expectations and routines, and working together.

I hope you'll all attend Back-to-School Night this Thursday, September 8th.  Come early, if you can, for pizza at 5:30.  The classroom presentations are from 6:30 to 7:00 and 7:00 to 7:30.  Fifth grade parents, you'll want to stay for an informative Camp meeting from 7:30 to 7:50 in the multipurpose room.

I look forward to seeing all of you then!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark

Here's scientist Naydeen looking at cells.

Our First Whole Week

Dear Parents,

Today was such a busy day, we didn't even have time to write our Daily Blog, so I'll tell you about our day here in my blog.  Starting Monday, a single student will be in charge of writing the Daily Blog each day.  Be sure to continue to read our blog and give that child some positive feedback.  We'll begin with Noah A, and go through the class in numerical order.

Our very busy day began with our first Social Studies test.  I taught the students how to enter their answers in their very cool responders, and they were thrilled to find out their grade immediately.  I am thrilled that they did so well on their tests!

We took our first Spelling test, and then the real fun began.  We learned about prime numbers by watching a couple of videos from an amazing website called http://mathplayground.com .  If your child is having any difficulty in math, they may be able to find some help there.  We learned how to make "rainbows" to list factors of a number, and we figured out all the prime numbers less than 120 by completing a "sieve of Eratosthenes."

Then came Science.  The fifth graders are learning about cells, so we watched a little presentation that compares a cell to a basketball game, and we learned about the functions of all the organelles in a cell.  Then we got to use the magnifying viewers to look at plant and animal cells.  You can see our scientists hard at work by looking under the "Our Slideshows" link, or you can just click here: http://www.sbcsseport.org/published/b/cl/bclark/collection/68/

After that, we got to buy passes for the very first time.  The students have really been looking forward to spending some of the Colonial Cash they've earned on some fun passes.  Next week, I'll have some students sitting at the teacher's desk, some will bring a healthy snack or sugar-free gum and enjoy it in class, some will go shoeless for a day, and some will get to do all their work in pen for a day.  Should be fun!

At the end of the day, we learned how to draw faces as we sketched out our self-portraits with "The Draw Man."  We'll color them next week and display them proudly on our bulletin board.

Today the students brought home their Friday Folders for the first time.  It contains all of their corrected work for the past week.  Please take some time this weekend to look over it with them, then sign the folder and send it back on Monday so your child can earn another dollar of Colonial Cash.

Today was a very busy, but very fun day.  Enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark

Boy, I want to be in your class.  It sounds like so much fun.  Erica was explaining about the responder at her desk.... still not exactly sure how it works.  Thank you for being such a wonderfully creative teacher.  It's going to be a great year.

The First Week of School

Dear Parents,

We have had a very smooth beginning of the school year.  My students are bright, cooperative, and very eager to learn.  They are excited about all the technology we'll be using in our classroom this year and have already spent quite a bit of time on the computers exploring this website.  Thank you to those of you who have left comments either here or on the Daily Blog.  Your interest is really encouraging them to want to work on the computers even more.  I will continue paying them a dollar for every comment left on our blogs through the end of next week, so go ahead and leave some more!

I appreciate your many words of support and confidence in me regarding the combination class.  I know you all have concerns about that, but I'm hoping put you at ease at Back-to-School Night, which is on Thursday, September 8th.  I look forward to seeing all of you then.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark
