Reading/Language Arts Textbook: Houghton Mifflin Reading
Writing Program: Step Up To Writing
The California State Board of Education fourth and fifth grade academic content standard in English/Language Arts states, in part: "In addition to their regular school reading, students read one-half million words annually, including a good representation of grade-level appropriate narrative and expository text (e.g., classic and contemporary literature, magazines, newspapers, online information)."
For the most part, we will focus on one story from our textbook each week, with periodic breaks for review and special projects. Students are required to take their reading textbook home every Wednesday to read the story of the week, but they are welcome to take it home any other night for extra practice.
In addition to stories from our reading textbook, we will read and study a variety of stories from our school's grade level core literature list.
